Traditional Office!
Most offices have a server. this is that mysterious computer typically running in a closet. Usually very few people work on it, it just "sits there". Since this server shares the majority of the company working data, this computer is usually the only system that is backed up, IF ANY GET BACKUP UP AT ALL!.

In addition to the mysterious server, each user has a work station connected to the "office network", In most cases, user programs are installed on these work stations and access local data or server data. Additionally, individual user data such as documents, downloads, local accounting data, etc. are also stored on the local work stations. In almost every situation, there is NO BACKUP for these local work stations. When a station dies or becomes corrupted, all local data is lost. Another issue commonly encountered is if a user has to switch work stations. All of that local data stays on the original work station. It does not follow the user from one station to another!

A typical CURRENT 4 work-station office configuration:

The physical office (in a building somewhere)

                                                                   The Traditional Office Configuraiton

A traditional office is usually based around the server. This "server" stores company data, sometime shared programs, and an assortment of other data. Work stations typically connect via a wired or wireless network in the office. Programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, and accounting programs run locally on individual work-stations. Additionally, each work-station also stores individual user data such as documents, downloads, and other desktop files. Program are individually installed and maintained on each work stations. In most offices, backups are only performed on the server and usually just on the data, not the programs or actual server configuration. In the event of a disaster recovery, the server and all of the work-station installation and configuration must be recreated from scratch before the data can be restored. This can significantly delay recovery, and require days or weeks to fine-tune all of the programs again! In most situations, all of the local user data files are lost! In offices such as sales offices where a work station may be shared between multiple users at different times, when a user moves to a different work-station, all of their local data is on a different work-station. All of these limitations are overcome in the VDI Cloud configuration.
